Pipe bursting is a trenchless method of repairing and rehabilitating buried pipelines, such as sewer, water or natural gas pipes, without the need for a traditional construction trench.
- An expanding device is introduced into the defective pipeline, shattering the pipe and drawing in the new line behind it
- Bursting Rigs may also be used to expand pipeline carrying capacity by replacing smaller pipes with larger ones, or upsizing.
- Insertion of short lengths may be made from pits but this involves jointing of the pipeline within the pit. This can be avoided by the use of slit trenches to insert pipe strings
